I am a very bad, terrible student. It is as if I have accumulated two decades of naughty students in my soul and they have all decided to come forth and re-live their naughtiness through me, here, in my classes.
When my teacher announces a new topic, I sigh out loud like a wounded puppy. When my teacher asks us a question, I avert my eyes, looking around the room hoping that by not making eye contact he will not call on me. Only one other student is in the class with me . . . When my teacher announces we have plenty of time for a topic, I whine, “Descancito!” (little break please) and squirm and collapse back into the couch like the marathon just cannot be run.

Avoiding my teacher’s gaze

My inner 12 year old has taken over, and it is only when my teacher threatens to come to Sydney and be my student that I push my in-class maturity to that of a a 16/17 year old.

The next level – ‘funcional’

Today I ditched class for the first time.

Today was the last day for one of the other students, and he hadn’t been hang gliding yet. Neither had I. To be fair, I suggested we go right after school at 2pm, but he had the good sense to suggest first thing in the morning, and since I hadn’t done my homework yet . . .

Para mis hispanohablantes, he aprendido muchas mientras aquí. Las clases me desafía y estoy disfrutando cada dia. Todavía, estoy un estudiante travieso. Lo que es el mejor via a aprender la idioma —para mi. Ojalà me convierta en un experto pronto! Pero disculpe mi mal grammatica!

(sorry iPad keyboard doesn’t support tildes, accent marks, etc.)

I arrived here sounding and speaking like a 5 year old. As of now, halfway through, I speak and sound like a very intelligent 5 year old. They call my level “funcional”. Conversational is just around the corner, but whether I get there or not, functional is just fine with me.

Using every surface to teach and learn

Oh Terence you’re hilarious. Hangliding is a pretty extreme, yet grown up, form of truancy 🙂
